(The name alone-“Unplugged”-conjured an imagined utopia where music was nothing more than the spontaneous expression of people in a room.) You’d come in, strip down, show your fans the heart bleeding under the armor. ![]() MTV had started hosting “Unplugged” in 1989 as a way to package famous artists in comparatively approachable contexts. “Kurt,” she said, “they think you are Jesus Christ.” Afterward, Cobain reportedly complained to Unplugged programmer Amy Finnerty that the audience must not have liked it because they were so quiet. For musicians whose sound was so essentially electric, the idea of playing acoustic-or, as it came to pass, in a subdued, semi-amplified state-wasn’t just like going on stage naked, but amputated. “We play so hard that we can’t tune our guitars fast enough.” As few as 24 hours before Unplugged, he was considering having Dave Grohl sit out because he thought Grohl’s drumming would overpower the rest of the band. “We’re just musically and rhythmically retarded,” he’d told Guitar World in the wake of 1991’s Nevermind. “This is from our first record,” he mutters before “About a Girl.” “Most people don’t own it.” Never mind the five million people who had bought the one that came next.Ĭobain was reportedly miserable before the taping, worried the band didn’t have the grace to pull off something so subtle. A month or so after Unplugged was taped, he bought a black Lexus, but was so mortified by it-and mocked so thoroughly by his friends-that he returned it within a day. Of course, that was the point of Unplugged, and, in a way, of Nirvana: Even after Cobain got famous, he tried, often painfully, to seem normal. If you place a stair into the water source (flat side to the lava), this prevents the water from flowing over the lava source, but the cobblestone still forms where flowing lava touches the waterlogged block. A basic understanding of fluids is helpful to prevent this. Doing so destroys the lava source, converting it into obsidian. When producing cobblestone, one must be careful not to let the flowing water touch the lava source block. This creates cobblestone where the fluids meet. Then, place water in it at the end closest to the hole and lava at the other end. Many generator designs exist, but the simplest way is to make a five block long trench with a one block gap in the middle. Variants of the generator can also produce stone, but this is generally trickier, because for stone, the lava must enter the water from above. When this fresh cobblestone is removed, the two fluids produce another piece of cobblestone. ![]() This fresh cobblestone then prevents the two streams from touching. Cobblestone generators work on the principle that when a lava stream comes into contact with water, the lava is turned into cobblestone. Cobblestone farming is the technique of using a cobblestone generator to produce cobblestone without damaging the terrain. Beautifully painted concept art versions of the original levels have been converted into 2.5D, and linear corridors are mapped onto curves. Cave Story, a Metroidvania-style game, was originally developed in 2004 by Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya as freeware for the PC and received a large cult following. I’ll initially vet some of it, so if I think, “oh, Daisuke’s probably not going to like this, or he’s going to want to change this,” I’ll give him some feedback, and what we’ll end up doing is, we’ll get two versions of a song over to Daisuke, and say “which one do you like? You hear a song, and it’s not just a song, but it’s what you remember about it. Without giving any spoilers for new fans, you think of a level, and you hear music in it – Daisuke and I were actually talking about this on the way here – music can really spawn memories, for good or for bad. I think when fans associate with Cave Story, a big part of it is the music. TR: For the music… it’s a pretty big undertaking. Before, I was working on everything alone, and it’s pretty lonely out there, doing all the computer programming and everything.Ībove: An artsy fact sheet for Cave Story 3D What’s really fun about both the Wii version and this latest 3DS version is being able to work with other designers and people. And that’s one of the exciting parts…ĭA: Exactly. And the process is a lot different, but it’s rewarding because I can approach it in a different way, and think about how I can extract the full potential out from the designers. Especially for character design – I need to rely on the actual designer for how to create these new characters. But now it’s a little different, so I have to sort of rely on everybody, the entire team, on how to create this game, how to design it. Before, I was able to sort of draw it out, create on my own, and then go back and forth between trial and error. Now I’m working with a big team, so the process is completely different. GR: Are you surprised by the difference of the process from when it was almost all your project, and now you’re supervising it as Cave Story has grown and gained popularity? How has that process changed for you?ĭA: It’s completely different from what I used to be doing, creating my own Cave Story. And then if there’s something I’d like to add, like a character design or something new, I’ll actually draw it out by myself and pitch it back over to the team.Ībove: Concept art for the new design of Quote, Cave Story's hero And I’ll go over it and direct the overall game development process. GR: How closely has Daisuke been involved in creating the new version? Have you been very hands-on, or have you been more of a consultant?ĭA: When I’m working on Cave Story 3D, many of the concept designs, characters and things like that will be pitched over to me. So we’ve added a couple of things that Daisuke and I have gone over, as far as some secrets and some Easter eggs that are going to make some of the original fans really happy, and it’ll also add some longevity for the game for anybody who’s playing it, and sees these grand new areas that we’re adding, as well. ![]() In a way, it’s almost like a true 3D remake from scratch.
